Past Players & Officials Association – Major Fundraiser to Support FTGJFC

Did you know that the FTGFC have a Past Players and Officials Association, and that their charter is to support the development of the Junior Players at our club?

It’s an awesome initiative, and a double reason why we should support events such as these!

Let’s all support these important events, and in turn the future of our club!

There are options for both sponsors and players.

Go Eagles!

FTGEJFC – An Exciting History of Girls Football

In late 2016, the club were very excited to receive a letter in the mail, that we have been holding on to, awaiting the exciting launch of the AFLW for season 2017 before sharing with you.

The letter (below) shows not only the exciting journey of two talented footballers, but also highlights a key point in time, within the club history, where prior committee members were well ahead of the curve, and welcomed and supported a group of footballers before girls football was really embraced by all.

I have read this letter with much pride several times over the past few months, and have literally been waiting for the day when I could share this with all of you too. I hope you read it with the same smile on your face that I had on mine.

 24th October 2016

To the Committee

Ferntree Gully Eagles Junior Football Club

Some 17 years ago, in 1999, I and two other parents established a girls football team to give our then twelve and thirteen year old daughters an opportunity to play AFL football.

At that time, girls playing AFL were few and far between, particularly in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. We had a team of girls ranging in age from 12-16 years old, a coach and team manager ready to go, and we approached many clubs in the Dandenong Ranges/Knox area asking them to give us a home. We were knocked back repeatedly, and laughed at by more than a few of them!

We struck it lucky when we approached Ferntree Gully Junior Football Club and from the time they welcomed us into the Club, we had nothing but support and encouragement. Two committee members in particular, John Milburn and Brian Sharp, gave us unstinting support and help.

Our time at Ferntree Gully was wonderfully positive for all of us and a highlight was our VWFL Division 3 Premiership in 2001. Most importantly, it opened up the horizon for girls who could start playing football and who were introduced to this great game, and a great club.

The reason I am writing to you now is to let you know that two of your original female players will be playing in the AFL Women’s inaugural season in 2017. They nominated for the Women’s AFL Draft that was held Wednesday 12th October at Docklands.

Kimberley Ebb was drafted to the Western Bulldogs (pick no 37) and Melissa Kuys has gone to Collingwood (pick no 118).

Both women also served as captains of their respective clubs in this year’s VFL competition – Mel at Knox, and Kim at Seaford. Kim was also named in the VFL Women’s Team of the Year.

There is possibly no one currently at the club who remembers the ‘Roo Girls (as we were known) but these girls got their start at Ferntree Gully Junior Football Club and for the record, we would like to convey our thanks and appreciation for the Club’s courage and willingness to take on a girls team at a time when such an action was very uncommon, and often not well received. Ferntree Gully played no small part in giving Kim and Mel their start in football and have certainly helped make possible their long careers in football.

I have noted from your website that you now have a number of girl’s teams. This is just wonderful to see and I wish them, and all at the Club, every success and a strong future.

Best Wishes

Heather Ebb

As well as this wonderful letter, we were also lucky enough to have received a copy of the team photo from the Premiership season in 2001:

Kim was also interviewed by the Western Bulldogs in a little Q&A just before Christmas that may be of interest to you:

In a recent conversation with Kim’s father, I was lucky to get some positive news that will hopefully see these two ladies join us down at girls training at some stage during 2017… but in the mean time, let’s get behind these two “Roo Girls” and cheer them home on what will hopefully be a successful and enjoyable season for them both!

An Open Session with Professional Counsellors & Support Staff

To all Ferntree Gully Football Players, Parents and families,

Given the tragic news of two Ferntree Gully Football Club players passing in the last couple of weeks, arrangements have been made for players, parents and family members to attend an open session with professional counsellors and support staff. Everyone is welcome to attend. The confirmed details of this session are:

DATE:    Friday 18 November (this Friday)

TIME:    6:00pm

VENUE: Wally Tew Reserve club rooms

TOPIC:   Grief and Loss

The recent days have been extremely challenging for all of us, so this session will give us an opportunity to come together for support, understand grief emotions and reactions, and to hear what we can each do to help cope with our losses.

As the impact of our tragedy has been felt far and wide, this open session is available to a wide range of people including members from our Junior and Senior Football club; and the Kilsyth Cricket Club.

We will hear from a clinical psychologist, and supports from several organisations will also be on hand including Headspace, Youth Services Knox, and Jesuit Social Services.

Further, the Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade have their own presentation from Beyond Blue on Monday night 21 November at 7:00pm and they too have opened up their session for anyone that feels the need for additional support; or if you cannot attend this Friday night. Please let me know if you plan to attend the Fire Brigade session for RSVP purposes.

REMEMBER: We know that at times of grief, there are many emotions and reactions that we all are experiencing; no two reactions will be the same – suffice to say that reaction is ‘normal’. Please be mindful of your own emotions; those of others around you; and how we can support one another at this difficult time.

You are also welcome to call anyone of us on either the Junior or Senior Executive. We are here to help and support you.

Sam Cavarra  – President – Ferntree Gully Senior FC  – 0401 710 668
